GLN-13 worked example

How to calculate a GLN check digit

  1. A GLN has 12 body digits followed by one check digit. Preserve every leading zero and enter only the 12 body digits in Generate mode.
  2. For body 950600014044, the digits weighted by 1 total 17 and the digits weighted by 3 total 16; 17 + 3 × 16 gives a weighted sum of 65.
  3. The next multiple of 10 is 70, so 70 − 65 = 5. Append 5 to obtain the complete GLN 9506000140445.

This arithmetic only calculates or validates the final digit. It does not issue, assign, look up or prove ownership of a GLN, verify a location or party, or create a barcode or label.

Exact lengths, one shared rule

GTIN, GLN and SSCC use the same GS1 Mod-10 arithmetic but have different required lengths. CheckDigit validates the length before calculating.
